Starfish (aka Seastars)

Starfish can be weird-looking creatures. Sure, they look kinda funny, but they are really interesting!

First off, starfish aren’t even real fish. They’re invertebrates, like sea urchins. That is why people also call them seastars. Speaking of stars, many starfish don’t have just 5 arms. They can grow up to around 40 arms. Starfish can also regrow their arms, though it takes about a year to do so. You can’t see them, but starfish do have eyes. They also have hundreds of tiny feet, but they don’t get around that quickly since they’re so small. Starfish are missing their brains and blood, though. Starfish have tough, leathery skin that protects them from predators, like sea turtles, snails, crabs, shrimp, otters, and even other starfish. With so many predators, i’m surprised they can sometimes live up to 35 years. That’s pretty old compared to some other sea creatures. There are around 2,000 species of starfish. And lastly, starfish can’t survive in fresh water.

Isn’t all that amazing? I know I’m impressed. You see, even though they don’t have brains, they are still living, breathing organisms. Have you heard around recently that dozens to hundreds of starfish keep washing up onto shores around the world due to storms and currents? It’s true! Comment down below on your favorite fact about starfish. Starfish are special creatures that need to be protected and preserved. They are truly one of a kind.
